How to Improve the "Monkey Jump" Instantly

When a skater jumps with both arms up, it is called monkey jump. This is common among beginners. This is a result of trying to jump higher with more power, and looks like a monkey jumping up. It feels like your jumping high, however it is just an illusion and you won't be able to succeed a multi-rotation jump with this way of jumping.

​Here, we will introduce a teaching method that is particularly effective for toddlers.

Toddlers love to be tickled under the chin. Try telling them, "Tickle your chin five times using both your hands in the air!" This may sound crazy, but give it a try. The monkey jump will be solved instantly!

Like this, you can turn things around by devising the way of communication. Child psychology is important when teaching young children.

Tighten your ankles together for the Air Position

Your ankles are also an important aspect when making a thin axis of rotation. Your ankles need to be tight against each other like shown in the left side of the image. You will never succeed in a jump if your legs are in a number "4" shape like shown in the right side of the image. This is called a "Leg wrap".

When coaching an air position of a jump, Japanese elite coaches pay close attention to the skaters little fingers and see if they're close tight to each other. If both little fingers are close tight to each other, the ankles will naturally tighten against each other. 

This action is also useful when you try to increase the power to spin in the air. Even a small gap between your little fingers will decrease your spin and will cause a deduction such as a "q", an "under rotation", or a "down grade" in double, triple, and even quad jumps.

...Here's another idea that you can try out. This method is very simple and is especially effective with young children. Put a cute sticker on their right boot, right around the shoe laces. When practicing, tell the skater...

How do you master an Axel?

The best way for a figure skating jump is, jumping high first and then start to rotate. It's not best when skaters start to rotate on the ice before jumping. However, many skaters tend to start rotating on the ice since they are more focused on rotating rather than jumping high. With Axels, the following are often seen.

  • The skater doesn't want to swing up their right thigh up high.

  • The skater tends to start rotating their head and/or upper body toward the direction of the rotation before taking off.

These are typical actions seen among skaters. These actions come from the skaters wanting to focus more on the rotation more than how high the jump should be. These actions are not standard, however, it is ok to sometimes do so when jumping multi rotational jumps such as the 3A and 4A. For young skaters, they might do so with the 2A. However, skaters should be aware that doing so is only acceptable when their jumps are successful and should not rely on these actions when they are having trouble with their jumps. When having trouble with jumps, it is best for skaters to practice the basics.
