8. Choreography That Follows the Music

Composition

Change your skating when the music changes.

What You Will Learn

Learn that skating with the music means more than moving on the beat. Your movement should change when the music changes.

Skating with the music does not only mean moving your arms on the beat. It means choosing the size, speed, direction, and shape of your movements to fit the beginning, build, quiet sections, and ending of the music.

When the music changes a lot but you keep the same speed, posture, and movement, the choreography may not look as though it reflects the shape of the music.

Good example
  • For soft, quiet music, use delicate movements and a smaller scale. When the music opens up, make your rink use and body shape larger.

😞 Poor example
  • The music becomes quiet, but the skater continues with the same strength and speed.

✍️ How to Analyze Your Program in Practice:
  • Listen to the music alone and identify “change points” where the mood, atmosphere, or impression drastically changes.

  • For each of these points, explain in words what will actually change in your skating.
