8. Are You Relying Only on Your Strong Side?

Skating Skills

Good Skating Skills do not rely only on the skater’s favorite foot or favorite direction.

Many skaters have one direction that feels easier. They may also have a foot that feels easier to use, an edge that feels easier to ride, or a direction that feels easier to turn.

This is natural.

But if the whole program always uses the same direction, the same foot, the same curve, or the same pattern, the skating may look limited.

To show better Skating Skills, the skater should show control in different ways: forward and backward, clockwise and counterclockwise, right foot and left foot, inside edges and outside edges.

This does not mean both sides must be used for exactly the same amount of time. The skater should not keep avoiding the weaker foot or weaker direction. The skater should show stable control throughout the program.

What You Will Learn

  • why relying only on the strong side can make skating look limited

  • why balance and edge control on both feet matter

  • why direction changes matter

  • why staying controlled on the weaker side is part of good Skating Skills

Good example
  • The skater can move with control both forward and backward.

  • The skater uses both clockwise and counterclockwise directions.

  • The skater shows steady edge control on both the right foot and the left foot.

  • The program does not depend only on the skater’s favorite direction or easiest pattern.

  • The skating quality does not suddenly drop when the skater uses the weaker side.

Poor example
  • The skater travels in almost the same direction most of the time.

  • The skater looks stable on one foot, but much weaker on the other foot.

  • The skater avoids difficult directions or edges.

  • The program repeats the same curve, same direction, or same skating pattern again and again.

  • When the direction changes, the skater loses speed, balance, or flow.

✍️ Summary

Good Skating Skills are not shown only on the skater’s strong side. The skater should show stable control with different feet, directions, and edges.
