Is the Skater Catching the Details of the Music?
Musical sensitivity is the ability to notice small details in the music and show them through movement. Timing means that the movement happens at the right moment. For example, if the arm moves slightly after the musical accent, the expression may look weak. But when the body movement matches a strong beat exactly, even a small movement can leave a strong impression. In good Presentation, the skater is not only counting the music. The skater seems to feel the breath, space, strength, accent, and ending of each musical phrase through the body.
What You Will Learn | |
In this section, you will learn about musical details and timing: • how to catch musical accents with the body • how to show the beginning, build, and ending of a phrase • why movement should not be late to the music • how small nuances can improve the quality of the performance |
✅ Good example
• The head or arms move clearly with the musical accent. • The movement has after-feeling at the end of a phrase. • When the music stretches, the body line also seems to stretch. • Small movements of the hands, neck, or eyes match the details of the music.
❌ Poor example
• The timing of the movement does not match the musical accent. • The musical phrase has ended, but the movement feels unfinished or cut off. • The body does not respond to small changes in the music. • The skater focuses too much on jump preparation and becomes late to the music.
✍️ Summary
Musical sensitivity and timing are not about whether the skater can hear the music. They are about whether the details of the music appear in the body at the right time.
