6. Are You Using the Whole Rink and Your Whole Body?

Composition

Create depth through height, direction, and width in your body movement.

What You Will Learn

Learn how to show space by changing your body height, direction, and shape, instead of only trying to skate farther across the rink.

Using space does not only mean skating bigger. It means changing the height, direction, and width of your body movements.

When you always enter jumps from the same kind of movement, move your body only in the center of the rink, and keep the same level of posture, the program can look flat and create a boring image for the viewer. In contrast, changes such as rising from a low position, turning from front-facing to side-facing, or using your body on a diagonal can create depth and make the composition feel more alive.

✍️How to Analyze Your Program in Practice:
  • Pause your program video and count how many low, medium, and high positions you can find.

  • Within those positions, count whether you have movements in many directions: vertical, horizontal, and diagonal.
