4. Expressiveness and Projection

Presentation

What Does It Mean for Expression to Reach Out?

Expressiveness is the ability to show the atmosphere of the music and the program. Projection is the ability to send that expression outward.

In good Presentation, it is not enough for the skater to feel something inside.

The feeling, atmosphere, and energy must also reach the judges and the audience.

This does not mean overacting. Even a small movement can be powerful if it has clear intention and matches the music.

On the other hand, even a big movement can look empty if it has no relationship to the music.

What You Will Learn

In this section, you will learn what it means for expression to reach the judges and the audience:

  • how inner feeling becomes visible through body movement

  • why movement needs intention

  • how eyes and energy can project outward

  • why even small movements can communicate strongly when they have meaning

Good example
  • The eyes, upper body, arms, and posture communicate the atmosphere of the music.

  • The energy of the performance seems to reach beyond the skater’s own body.

  • Small movements have meaning and respond to details in the music.

  • The skater’s own personality appears naturally within the program.

Poor example
  • The face shows expression, but the body movement has no feeling.

  • The movement is big, but it does not match the meaning of the music or program.

  • The eyes are down, and the performance feels closed inside the skater.

  • The skater is only doing the choreography, without sending the performance outward.

✍️ Summary

Projection is not about making movements bigger or more dramatic. It is about sending the atmosphere of the music and program outward through the whole body.
