4. Do Your Turns Look Clean and Stable?

Skating Skills

Turns are one of the easiest places to see Skating Skills.

A clean turn is not just a change of direction.

A clean turn means the skater changes direction while keeping balance, flow, edge quality, and body control.

If the skater loses speed, balance, or posture right after a turn, the turn may look weak. If the turn is clean and stable, the skating continues naturally into the next movement.

Good turns make the program look connected. Poor turns make the program look broken or insecure.

What You Will Learn

  • why turns show blade control

  • why balance should continue through the turn

  • why flow after the turn is important

  • why a turn can look weak even if the skater does not fall

Good example
  • The skater turns without wobbling.

  • The edges before and after the turn are clear.

  • The body stays controlled and in a good position.

  • The skater keeps moving smoothly after the turn.

Poor example
  • The skater makes the turn, but loses speed right away.

  • The turn skids or scrapes on the ice.

  • The upper body twists too much or collapses.

  • The skater looks unstable after the turn.

✍️ Summary

A good turn is not just a change of direction. It is a controlled change of direction with balance, edge quality, and continued flow.
