16. Summary: Three Things to Change Before Your Next Competition

Composition

Three things to change before your next competition.

What You Will Learn

Turn all the points we covered into three simple actions you can use in your very next practice.

⛸️ What to check in practice
  • 👉 Remove one stop: After a jump or spin, make your next movement start right away without pausing.

  • 👉 Use one music change: At a moment where the music changes, clearly change one thing: your direction, your height, your speed, or how you use your body.

  • 👉 Fill one empty part of the rink: Skate into a part of the ice you normally do not use, and give that path a clear purpose.

✍️ Summary

You do not need to change everything at once to raise your Composition score. Just fix the one problem that stands out the most. Then, watch a video to see how that single change makes your whole program look better.

Final Summary

Composition is the power to blend your jumps, spins, steps, body movements, ice use, and music into one beautiful program. It is the score that helps you move from simply "doing" technical elements to truly "creating" a performance.

Sources and how this material is used

Official basis: ISU Communication No. 2788, updated May 19, 2026, p. 19, Program Components - Composition. The official criteria are “multidimensional movements and use of space,” “connections between and within the elements,” “choreography reflecting musical phrase and form,” “pattern and ice coverage,” and “unity.”

Educational wording: The good and weak examples, practice methods, and parent guidance are educational explanations that help skaters ages 10-15 and beginner parents turn the official wording into actions. They are not direct quotations from the official text.
