14. Composition Practice Checklist

Composition

What should you check during rink practice?

What You Will Learn

Know exactly what to practice when your coach or people around you tell you, “Show more expression!”

Composition takes too much time if you only practice by skating your whole program from start to finish. Instead, break your program into short parts, pick just one goal, and practice it over and over.

⛸️ How to Analyze Your Program in Practice
  • 👉 Check the jumps: Skate for just 4 seconds before and after a jump. Watch closely to see if your movement stops completely anywhere.

  • 👉 Check the music changes: Pick one moment where the music changes. Decide on one thing you will change there: your body height, your direction, or your speed.

  • 👉 Check the rink map: Write down where you do your jumps and spins. Check if they are crowded together in the same part of the rink.

  • 👉 Watch without sound: Watch a video of your program with the sound turned off. Check if you are keeping the same posture or skating in the same direction for too long.

  • 👉 Watch with sound: Watch the video with the sound on. Check if your movements are changing too late after the music changes.

✍️ Summary

The first thing you should fix is a big stop or a repeated pattern. Before you try to add more pretty poses, focus on making your program flow without stopping.
